Why were Mungo Man and Mungo Lady buried in these ways?
Nobody really knows why Mungo Man and Mungo Lady were buried in the ways they were, but many scientists have been puzzled by the sequence of events that occurred when Mungo Man and Mungo Lady were buried, which were: On February 26 1974, a grave site was discovered near the lunettes and Lake Mungo and their was the remains of the eldest skeleton in Australia (Mungo Man). The skeleton was was buried in a very strange way, the fingers were interlocking and placed over the groin. The bones were covered in red ochre which is thought to be the earliest use of red ochre for this specific reason.
Mungo Lady
1. Mungo Lady was cremated (burnt).
2. Then her bones were smashed.
3. Then the bones were cremated again.
4. Then she was buried in a shallow hole
near the fire.
Mungo Man
1. Mungo Man was carefully arranged
2. His legs were together
3. His hands were joined
4. Ochre was sprinkled over him or painted on his chest
5. Then he was buried
I think that Mungo Lady and Mungo Man were buried the ways they were because possibly the people that came to Australia killed the Mungo people and they did not want any one to know about the existence of the Mungo people.
I also think that the humans killed the Mungo people because they could have seen the Mungo people as a threat and wanted to take over their land and make it their own and start new colonies and expand their race.
